43° National Congress Of The Italian Society Of Pharmacology Creating Value Through Pharmacological Research

A congress of a learned society serves to showcase the activities and research of the members, to imagine and shape together the future of the discipline, and to bring together professionals with similar backgrounds to allow them to establish collaborations and exchange best practices. The Congress in Turin embraces all three of these missions.

Ample space will be given, as usual, to high-quality research. Yet, there are important changes compared to the past. The traditional oral communications have been converted into topic symposia organized exclusively by the early-career pharmacology members. Furthermore, an effort has been made, whenever possible, to bring together basic and clinical content. Indeed, while a good researcher in any discipline is measured by the ability to answer relevant scientific questions and thus push the boundaries of knowledge, a pharmacologist has a further challenge: to move transversally across all areas of drug development, from target identification to market access dynamics, encompassing preclinical, non-clinical and clinical research, evidence generation and evaluation, as well as regulation and market dynamics.

The congress aims to be a showcase of the golden age we are experiencing. Drugs are being developed much more rapidly than in the past, a significantly greater number of drugs is being developed, and the available technologies have increased substantially. This new wealth is accompanied by increased complexity at every level and therefore by the need for significant changes. Proximity of care, system sustainability, telemedicine, translational medicine, precision medicine, prevention, and artificial intelligence are no longer slogans but are embedded in the pharmaceutical world we live in. In this context, the role of the pharmacologist is central, as the transversal nature of the profession will bring significant value to the system.

Finally, the congress will address many of the key cross-cutting themes at the heart of current discussions, from high-quality basic research to new tools in clinical research, from real-world evidence to regulatory uncertainties, from evidence-based medicine to the personalization of therapies, including gender pharmacology, and from economic sustainability to organizational innovation.

The congress will bring together leading experts from academia, the public and private sectors, thereby fostering a high-level and productive scientific environment. To support this process, structured networking opportunities will be provided for trainees, members serving on Ethics Committees, professionals working in Phase I Units and molecular tumor boards, and members of the SIF sections.
